@Kamal: While I cannot deny the editor’s contribution to any publication, a writer cannot voluntarily take up an editor’s job, even if he/she wishes to. Editors are chosen on the basis of more experience. Howevever, what a writer can do is self-edit publications, so that editors do not have to proof read every line and instead can look at the bigger picture. This conversely will help the writer to acquire editing skills eventually.

To be a good editor, one needs to be in the writer’s shoes constantly. In fact, editors should be encouraged to take up occasional writing assignments to keep their perspective fresh.
I think it should work the other way also to appreciate the contribution of a technical editor.

That, I agree with – in fact my comment was more from the perspective of building appreciation for the editor’s role while valuing the writer’s contributions. I hire both in my team and I think the two roles work best when each understands the other well.
